The first walls which surrounded Nicosia during the 14th century were made by the Franks and covered a larger area than the previous Venetian walls of the 16th century which surround the old town until today. When the Venetians took over Cyprus, they decided to destroy the Frank Walls as they were old and could not protect the town from new weapons.

The Frank walls were also very big and the Venetian army could not man them very close to the hills to the east and southeast of the town.

The circular walls which were made by the Venetians were supported by eleven bastions in the shape of a heart and were protected by a trench of 80 metres width.

They were built by clay bricks with the bottom part being supported by rocks. When the Ottomans took over Nicosia they repaired the walls and covered the upper part with stones.

The trench and the surrounding walls have many uses today, such as sport field, a public garden, open area sculpture exhibition, parking areas etc.
