Nestled at around 1,100 meters above sea level in the heart of the Troodos Mountains, Agros is one of Cyprus’s most beloved mountain villages. Known for its sweet scent of roses, rich cultural traditions, and cool alpine charm, this picturesque village offers visitors a genuine taste of rural Cypriot life.

History & Origins

Agros owes its name to the former Monastery of Megalos Agros, which was founded by monks fleeing iconoclastic persecution in the Byzantine Empire during the 9th century. These monks brought with them a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary and established a spiritual center that later gave rise to the village.

Though the original monastery was demolished in the late 19th century, its legacy lives on through the name of the village and its deep-rooted religious identity. Many of Agros's customs, feasts, and religious festivals have their roots in the life of this long-lost monastery.

The Village of Roses

Agros is especially famous for cultivating the fragrant Damask rose (Rosa damascena), which thrives in the village’s cooler climate and rich soil. Every May, locals gather at dawn to handpick rose petals, which are then used in a variety of products such as rosewater, rose oil, liqueurs, sweets, and cosmetics.

The annual rose harvest is a cherished tradition that attracts visitors from across the island and beyond. The rosewater produced in Agros is highly regarded for its purity and has become a signature product of the community. Workshops in the village often offer demonstrations of the distillation process, giving visitors a first-hand look at this age-old craft.

A Taste of Tradition

Agros is a culinary hub for traditional Cypriot foods and handmade treats. The village is especially known for its smoked meats such as lountza, hiromeri, and spicy pastourmas, often prepared using traditional smoking methods that have been passed down for generations.

Equally popular are the soutzioukkos, grape sweets, and dozens of varieties of spoon sweets and jams—many of which are flavored with rosewater. Local producers also offer handmade sausages, rose petal tea, herbal liqueurs, and an array of mountain wines and zivania, a strong Cypriot spirit.

Many family-owned shops welcome visitors to taste these local specialties and learn more about the village's culinary heritage.

Heritage and Religious Sites

Agros is dotted with charming churches and chapels that reflect its spiritual legacy. The Panagia Eleousa Church, built on the site of the old monastery, is the main church and houses a revered 19th-century icon of the Virgin Mary.

Other religious landmarks include the Church of Timios Prodromos, as well as newer chapels dedicated to saints like Agios Gerasimos and Agia Kyriaki. These sacred spaces are often focal points of local religious festivals and community gatherings.

The village also features a museum dedicated to Solomos Frangoulides, one of Cyprus’s most important painters, who lived and worked in Agros. Nearby, an old olive press has been restored and now serves as a cultural attraction showcasing traditional agricultural techniques.

Surrounded by Nature

Agros’s mountain setting makes it a perfect base for nature lovers. The village is surrounded by pine-covered slopes, almond trees, vineyards, and fragrant herb gardens. Several well-marked nature trails start or pass through Agros, connecting hikers with nearby villages, monasteries, and scenic lookouts.

Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful seasons, when the hills are alive with color and the air carries the sweet scent of blossoms or woodsmoke.

A Lively Village with Modern Comforts

Despite its traditional character, Agros is a vibrant and well-developed community. It has schools, medical facilities, shops, a theatre, and a range of restaurants and cafes. The village’s amphitheatric layout provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and its welcoming atmosphere makes it ideal for weekend getaways or longer stays.

Visitors can choose from cozy guesthouses, stone-built cottages, and mountain hotels offering modern amenities with traditional charm.

Festivals and Local Celebrations

The most famous celebration in Agros is the Annual Rose Festival, held every May. During this colorful event, visitors can watch rose-picking and distillation demonstrations, enjoy music and dance performances, and sample a wide array of rose-themed products and traditional foods.

Other local festivals include religious celebrations tied to the saints of the village’s churches, as well as seasonal events celebrating wine, harvests, and local crafts.

Agros is more than just a pretty village—it's a place where history, tradition, and nature come together in perfect harmony. Whether you're drawn by the intoxicating scent of roses, the flavors of Cypriot cuisine, or the peace of the forested hills, Agros offers a rich and memorable experience. It stands as a living example of Cyprus’s rural heritage, thriving through its deep community spirit and love for the land.
