Cyprus sits just north of the boundary where the African plate grinds beneath the Anatolian one — the Cyprus Arc — which is why the island records a steady trickle of small earthquakes and, occasionally, a large one. This page holds every event of magnitude 2 and above within roughly 150 km of the island since 2000: 5,176 in total, or about 199 a year.

Almost all of them are far too small to notice: 3,436 of the 5,176 are below magnitude 3, which is roughly the threshold at which people indoors start to feel anything at all. Genuinely strong events are rare — only 9 have reached magnitude 5 in twenty-five years. The largest on this record is the M6.6 of 11 January 2022, centred 50 km NW of Polis.

One caveat worth knowing before reading the yearly chart: the rising counts through the 2000s and 2010s reflect a denser instrument network, not a more active island. More small events are detected now because more of them can be.

  • 2 Minor — 3,436 recorded since 2000. Detected by instruments; almost never felt.
  • 3 Light — 1,589 since 2000. Often felt indoors as a brief shudder, no damage.
  • 4 Moderate — 142 since 2000. Widely felt, rattles windows and crockery.
  • 5+ Strong — 9 since 2000. Felt across the island; the strongest in this record was M6.6 in January 2022.

Elsewhere on Cyprus Island

Data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, covering magnitude 2 and above within roughly 150 km of Cyprus. Refreshed nightly — last updated 1 Oct 2026, 03:00.

Every earthquake on this page is a real, catalogued event within roughly 150 km of Cyprus, magnitude 2.0 and above. The archive goes back to 2000 and refreshes every night at 03:00, so the most recent tremor is usually listed within hours of the seismologists confirming it.

Use the map and filters above to narrow by magnitude, by year or by how close an event was to a town. Click any circle for the exact time, depth, magnitude and the nearest settlement.

Data comes from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, which aggregates readings from national networks across the region, including Cyprus. Magnitudes for very recent events are sometimes revised upward or downward in the days after they occur; we re-read the last fortnight each night, so those corrections flow through here automatically.
