Mackenzie Beach, Larnaca

Mackenzie Beach (also written McKenzie or Makenzie) is a few minutes south of the centre of Larnaca, and it is an unusual mix: golden sand and calm shallow water, a dense strip of bars and restaurants, and aircraft passing low overhead on final approach to the airport next door.

Where the name comes from

Mackenzie traces back to a Scottish family who settled in the area during the British colonial period. One member — possibly a customs officer or landowner named Mackenzie — became associated with this part of the shoreline in the early 20th century, and the name stuck locally even though no official title was ever recorded. Today it refers to a beach, a promenade and a whole district of bars and restaurants.

The beach

The defining feature is the calm, shallow water, which is why it suits families and less confident swimmers. It holds Blue Flag status for cleanliness and safety standards. The sand is fine and compact — good for walking barefoot or beach volleyball — and the sea stays shallow a long way out. Sunbeds and umbrellas run in rows along the shore with service from the beach bars behind them.

Eating and nightlife

Mackenzie is arguably Larnaca's eating and nightlife centre. The promenade is lined with restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars and clubs, from high-end seafood places serving local fish to lounge bars such as Ammos, Lush and Re.Buke, plus shisha lounges and beach cafes that carry on from afternoon into the night. On summer weekends it becomes an open-air nightlife strip with DJ sets and beach parties.

Aircraft overhead

Mackenzie sits directly under the approach to Larnaca International Airport, and planes pass low over the beach before landing. For anyone interested in aviation or photography it is a rare chance to watch aircraft this close from a sunbed. Local life and events

Mackenzie is not only a visitor beach — Cypriot families walk the promenade, particularly on Sundays. Through summer it hosts live music, open-air cinema and yoga on the sand. It also has a part in Epiphany (6 January), when priests bless the water and swimmers dive for a cross thrown into the sea, a ritual repeated along the coast.

Getting there

By car it is about five minutes from central Larnaca with parking nearby, and buses connect it to the city centre, the marina and the airport. On foot, the coastal walk from Finikoudes takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Nearby

The Larnaca Salt Lake and Hala Sultan Tekke are both minutes inland, which makes this a practical base for the whole southern side of the city. Larnaca Marina is at the far end of the seafront, and the rest of the coast is listed under beaches in Larnaca.
