Tucked on the southeastern fringes of Nicosia, Athalassa National Forest Park is more than just a green space — it’s a breathing heart of biodiversity, history, and recreation for the capital of Cyprus. Covering around 840 hectares, it's the largest green area in the city, offering a rich mixture of native flora and fauna, historical remnants, and well-maintained amenities that appeal to joggers, cyclists, families, and nature lovers alike.

The park takes its name from the ancient area of Athalassa, which dates back to medieval times. Historical evidence suggests the region was once used for agriculture and hunting by nobles during the Lusignan and Venetian periods. The remains of an old royal hunting lodge (referred to as the Athalassa Palace Ruins) still lie within the park boundaries, quietly echoing a bygone era.

Although much of the park was reforested and landscaped during the British colonial period in the 20th century, it wasn’t until 1990 that Athalassa was officially designated a National Forest Park — a move that reinforced its protection and ensured it would be preserved for public use and environmental education.

Athalassa Park is a haven for biodiversity in an otherwise urban sprawl. The landscape is a blend of woodland, shrubland, and wetland ecosystems, featuring:

  • Flora: Over 300 plant species have been identified, including native pine, carob, olive, and eucalyptus trees. In spring, the park comes alive with wildflowers such as anemones, cyclamens, and orchids.
  • Fauna: The park supports a variety of wildlife, particularly birds. Seasonal visitors like the Ferruginous Duck, Black-winged Stilt, and Little Grebe are commonly seen near the park’s artificial lake and wetlands. Reptiles, hares, hedgehogs, and insects also call Athalassa home.

This blend of ecosystems makes it an ideal spot for birdwatchers, botanists, and casual nature observers alike.

Athalassa National Park has been carefully designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of visitors:

  • Walking & Jogging Trails: The park offers over 20 kilometers of flat, well-marked trails for walking and running. These are shaded and scenic, perfect for early morning or late afternoon strolls.
  • Cycling: One of the standout features is a 16-kilometer dedicated cycling loop that winds through eucalyptus groves and open meadows — ideal for both amateur and serious cyclists.
  • Family Fun: Near the Aglantzia and IKEA entrances, you’ll find large children’s playgrounds, picnic tables, fountains, and shaded rest areas. Barbecue spots are also available for family gatherings.
  • Dog-Friendly Paths: Designated areas welcome dog walkers, with plenty of open space and trash bins for convenience. It’s a favorite spot for pet owners in Nicosia.

One of Athalassa’s most important contributions to the community is its Environmental Information Centre, which serves as both a museum and a classroom. Managed by the Department of Forests, this center provides:

  • Exhibitions with life-sized dioramas of local habitats
  • A scale model of the park
  • A mini-theatre for short environmental films
  • A small botanical garden with indigenous plants
  • Interactive learning experiences for school groups

The center regularly hosts workshops, field trips, and awareness programs focused on ecology, conservation, and sustainability. It’s open to the public on weekdays, with a small entrance fee of €1.

The beauty of Athalassa changes with the seasons, offering visitors a different experience throughout the year:

  • Spring: Wildflowers bloom, birds nest, and the landscape turns lush green. It’s the best time for photography and nature walks.
  • Summer: Early mornings and late evenings are ideal due to the heat. Shady groves provide respite for walkers and picnickers.
  • Autumn: A golden hue blankets the trees, and migratory birds begin to arrive. Temperatures become ideal for long hikes.
  • Winter: Rain replenishes the lake and wetlands. While the trees are bare, the serenity and bird activity are still captivating.

Athalassa Park is more than just a natural retreat — it has become a hub for community events, outdoor yoga sessions, environmental campaigns, and charity marathons. Local schools often organize visits here for educational purposes, and community groups host clean-ups and conservation days.

For many Nicosians, Athalassa is a daily escape — a place to unwind, reflect, or exercise. Its central location and peaceful environment make it an essential part of urban life in Cyprus’s capital.

  • Opening Hours: Open daily from sunrise to sunset
  • Best Entrances: Aglandjia, Keryneias Avenue, or the IKEA roundabout area
  • Facilities: Restrooms, water fountains, picnic tables, bike rentals (near main entrances), parking
  • Accessibility: Most trails are flat and wheelchair-friendly
  • Entry: Free access to the park; small fee for the Visitor Centre

Athalassa National Forest Park is a rare treasure — a sprawling green space that combines ecological richness with community spirit. Whether you're a birdwatcher, a weekend jogger, a parent with young kids, or someone simply needing a break from the city’s noise, Athalassa offers space, serenity, and a tangible connection to Cyprus's natural heritage.
