Cyprus Malls

Shopping malls arrived in Cyprus late and then arrived all at once. Within about a decade they went from non-existent to being where a good proportion of the island shops, eats and spends a wet Sunday — a shift from street shops and open markets that changed the retail geography of every city. This site documents 8 malls, listed by district further down the page.

Nicosia

The capital has the most of them. The Mall of Cyprus was the island’s first large-format mall and remains one of the busiest, and the Nicosia Mall, opened in November 2018, is the newest at some 48,000 square metres. The Mall of Engomi is the smaller, more local one.

The coastal cities

In Limassol, My Mall is the main one and has expanded steadily. Paphos has two: Kings Avenue Mall and the Neon Mall. Larnaca is the city still catching up, with Sunny Mall and Zenon Mall both developments rather than open trading centres — Zenon planned at around 45,000 square metres with parking for over 1,200 cars.

Practical notes

Mall hours are longer and more predictable than the island’s traditional shop hours, which is much of their appeal: no long afternoon closure, and Sunday opening where the high street has none. Most have a cinema, a food court and free parking, and in July and August the air conditioning is a legitimate reason to go in its own right. VAT refunds for non-EU visitors are handled by individual retailers rather than centrally.
