The Red Wonder of Cyprus Nestled near the village of Mitsero in the Nicosia District, Kokkinopezoula Lake, often referred to as the "Red Lake," is a site of both eerie beauty and historical significance. Its striking crimson hue, caused by the high concentration of metal deposits in the water, makes it a fascinating attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Kokkinopezoula Lake owes its origins to Cyprus’ rich mining history. During the early 20th century, the area was an active site for copper and iron pyrite mining. The mining operations left behind open pits that later filled with water, creating the lake. The high levels of acidic minerals in the water give it its distinctive reddish coloration. The lake gained international attention in 2019 when it became the center of a chilling investigation into a series of crimes, further adding to its mysterious aura.

The vivid red color of Kokkinopezoula is a rare natural phenomenon caused by the oxidation of heavy metals. The stark contrast between the lake's crimson waters and the surrounding barren landscape creates an almost otherworldly scene. Photographers and adventurers flock to the site to capture its surreal beauty, particularly during sunrise and sunset, when the colors appear even more vibrant.

While the lake is a striking sight, visitors are advised to admire it from a safe distance. The water’s toxicity makes it unsuitable for swimming or direct contact. Nevertheless, its dramatic appearance and historical significance make it a must-see destination for anyone exploring Cyprus. The nearby village of Mitsero offers a glimpse into rural Cypriot life, and the surrounding trails provide an opportunity for scenic hikes.

Kokkinopezoula Lake is approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Nicosia. It’s easily accessible by car, and there are parking areas near the site. Use Mitsero as your starting point, and follow the local signs leading to the lake.
