Konnos Bay is a small, sheltered cove on the Famagusta coast, between Ayia Napa and Protaras. It sits in a horseshoe between rugged cliffs and greenery, which is what gives it its character: the headlands shelter the water, so the bay stays calm and shallow when the open coast nearby does not.
The beach
Soft golden sand runs the length of the cove, and the water reads in bands of blue and green because it is shallow and clear over a sandy bottom. The shelter and the gentle gradient make it a straightforward choice for families with young children and for anyone who would rather swim than deal with surf. The surrounding cliffs give the bay its enclosed, contained feel and are the reason it photographs as well as it does.
In the water
Snorkelling and diving around the edges of the bay turn up marine life and rock formations close to shore. For anything faster there are jet skis, banana boat rides and parasailing operating in season.
On land
The bay is surrounded by walking trails through the Cape Greco National Forest Park, and this is what lifts Konnos above being just a swimming stop. The Konnoi – Spylia tou Kyklopa trail starts here and follows the shore to the Cyclops Cave and back; the simplest way to reach that cave is to park at Konnos and take the path north of the beach, up the hill. The Konnoi – Agioi Anargyroi trail runs from the same area along the cliffs.
Facilities
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent, and there is a beach bar along with restaurants nearby. It is an organised beach rather than a wild one — worth knowing if you are picturing an empty cove, because in high summer it is not one.
Looking after it
The bay's condition is actively protected. Take waste away with you and avoid anything that disturbs the marine life around the rocks; the same shelter that makes the water calm also makes the ecosystem here easy to damage.
